Dr HJ Foley Rest Park is located on the corner of Bridge Road and Glebe Point Road in Glebe. The City of Sydney has been engaged in an ongoing upgrade to the park and a new amenities building formed part of this strategy. The now demolished existing amenities building was poorly situated in the southwestern corner of the park and presented a series of surveillance and amenity issues for the public. We have designed a crisp little rectangular building, in conjunction with the City of Sydney design team, that is located close to the northern park entry, sitting in a zone between the steps and the entry ramp. The modest scale is appropriate given the simple brief to accommodate single male, female and all-access amenities. The building presents as a masonry and steel structure from the ramp side, and as a timber-screened building from the park. The building is structured around an open circulation zone that houses a stainless steel shared hand-washing trough mounted on a long timber bench, providing users of the park with a place to rest. An ironbark screen, that will accommodate planting, wraps up and over to become a permeable roof above this space. The three cubicles are arranged off this area and feature high quality translucent polycarbonate roofing, enabling them to be lit naturally. The sliding gates at each end are closed at night to secure the building. We have subverted the traditional idea of the brick public loo by floating the building above the ground plane by 50mm. This provides for a shadow line and also increases the building’s amenity through aiding ventilation and maintenance.
