The project involved the complete refurbishment of a single storey semi detached house located on the northern side of a pair of houses in North Bondi. The existing house was very modest in size and the clients required additional space to accommodate the evolving needs of the family. This involved the introduction of a new upper level and the full replanning of the ground level.
The house is accessed via an open landscaped side passageway leading to the new entry which was moved toward the centre of the house to minimise corridor space. This central arrival point opens into the open plan kitchen, dining, living space which is directly connected to the tree lined rear courtyard. This main living area is equipped with a horizontal high level window running the length of the space to connect to the northern light.
The entry area also provides access to the main bedroom suite area in the front of the house and the stair which winds its way around the central blade wall up to the upper level. A section of “slatted” timber floor is located on the top landing of the stair which allows daylight from the skylight over to filter down into the entry area.
The upper level accommodates a secondary living space, two bedrooms, and a shared bathroom plus general storage facilities.
The selection of materials was kept deliberately simple with Customorb roofing, painted “Vee” jointed timber weatherboarding to the new upper level and the existing rendered masonry walls retained on the ground level. The colour palette was monochromatic within a range of whites.
