A compartmentalised apartment has been reconfigured to maximise spectacular views of Australia’s most famous beach. The space forms part of an early 1980’s development that was extensively refurbished in the late 1990’s under our design direction. An enviable position at the southern end of Bondi Beach means that all apartments enjoy expansive views to the north and east.

The new design seeks to address the mean proportions and boxy nature of the previous layout. The original scheme has been retained, with public spaces at the front and private at the rear, separated by a central services zone, however, the spaces have been subtly rearranged to maximise the limited space available. The two small bedrooms at the rear have been expanded into an existing balcony enclosure, and the laundry room has been converted into an ensuite, with the laundry facilities being moved into a joinery cabinet off the central corridor.

As with much of our work, the use of joinery has been crucial to the success of this project. Extensive storage has been provided to accommodate the various needs of modern living, enabling the clutter of daily life to be hidden away and larger items such as audio-visual equipment and air conditioning to be neatly concealed. Different textures have been used to create visual interest and lend a tactile sense to the space. A new timber veneer-clad joinery element in the centre of the apartment acts as a counterpoint to the predominantly white finishes of the scheme and houses a secret door behind which the expanded bathroom is concealed. To unify the various spaces of the apartment, a consistent floor finish of large format ceramic tiles has been applied throughout.

The original kitchen has been opened up to create a visual connection with the living area and dramatic views beyond. This also provides the living area with additional display and storage space. The blank living room wall has been wrapped with mirrors to magnify the spectacular view and create a dramatic sense of spaciousness. The living/dining area has also been furnished with a new credenza unit that incorporates a gas fire to provide heating and act as a focal point in the space.

In the Bondi Apartment, we have created a light and airy home of generous proportions that takes full advantage of its incredible location.
